Nighttime Itching as the Main Symptom of Helminthiasis in Children

Pediatrician Tatyana Tarasova from «SM-Clinic» for children pointed out nighttime itching and restless sleep as key indicators of possible helminth infection in young children. According to her, with enterobiasis, itching around the anus intensifies in the evening and at night, leading to frequent awakenings and irritability in the child.

Scratching causes redness and irritation of the skin around the anal area, which increases discomfort and restlessness. These symptoms are especially noticeable in children under 10 years old, when enterobiasis is one of the most common parasitic diseases.

Additional Symptoms and Signs of Infection

Besides nighttime itching, helminth infection in children can manifest as abdominal bloating, nausea, changes in stool, and unstable appetite. These symptoms are often accompanied by weight loss and increased fatigue, worsening the child’s overall condition.

In severe cases, with a significant parasite load, anemia and metabolic disturbances may develop. Skin rashes also occur but are not reliable indicators of helminthiasis on their own and require comprehensive diagnostics.

Visual Signs and the Importance of Early Detection

Parents may notice small white worms resembling threads on the skin around the anus, on underwear, or bedding, especially at night. However, the absence of visible parasites does not rule out infection, as some children experience nearly asymptomatic helminthiasis.

Early detection and treatment are very important, as parasitic infections can affect a child’s growth and development. In Russia, enterobiasis is on the list of diseases that require mandatory monitoring by pediatricians in children’s clinics.

Diagnostic Methods and Treatment Recommendations

For accurate diagnosis of enterobiasis, pediatrician Tarasova recommends using the sticky tape test, taken in the morning before washing or using the toilet. Stool analysis, while common, does not always detect pinworms due to their life cycle characteristics.

Self-treatment with antiparasitic drugs is unacceptable. Tarasova insists on consulting a treating physician to prescribe appropriate therapy, which reduces the risk of complications and reinfection within families with children.

Public Importance and Preventive Measures

Helminthiases remain one of the frequent reasons for pediatric visits in children’s medical facilities in Moscow and other major cities. The cause lies in the high contagion of pinworms and insufficient hygiene practices among preschool and early school-age children.

Prevention includes regular handwashing, changing bedding, and thorough cleaning of children’s spaces. There are no vaccines against helminthiasis, so monitoring and timely treatment remain key measures to protect children’s health.

Conclusion: Nighttime itching and restless sleep in children are important signals that require pediatric attention for early detection and treatment of helminth infections.
