Sony Interactive Entertainment, Inc. has applied to Rospatent to register the PlayStation name and logo in Russia. The documents are dated October 28; the trademarks have been filed in three classes of the International Classification of Goods and Services, covering games, consoles and related devices.
What the applications cover
The applications cover not only the PlayStation word mark but also its corporate logo. They concern classes No. 9, 28 and 41. The goods and services listed include video games, game consoles, headphones and VR headsets.
The Nice Classification groups goods and services for trademark registration. Filing the applications therefore means that Sony is seeking to secure the PlayStation marks in the specified categories; it does not, in itself, indicate that sales or PlayStation Store operations are resuming.
Applications follow registrations for other brands
In October 2025, Sony had already approached Rospatent regarding three other brands: Walkman, Bravia and Xperia. Those applications came from Japan on October 3 and also concerned the company’s trademarks.
The new filing specifically concerns PlayStation and differs in the list of classes claimed: these include game consoles, video games and devices such as headphones and VR headsets. Taken together, the applications cover several of Sony’s product areas, but do not confirm plans to release specific devices in Russia.
Context: Sony’s operations in Russia
On March 10, 2022, Sony suspended product shipments to Russia and shut down the PlayStation Store online shop. Trademark registration and commercial activity are separate matters: an application to Rospatent concerns rights to the marks, not the availability of products for sale.
In August 2025, it became known that Sony Mobile Communications Rus, which represented Sony Mobile Communications’ interests in Russia, had ceased to exist. Documents to voluntarily liquidate the company were filed with the Federal Tax Service on October 10, 2024. This concerns Sony’s mobile division’s representative office in Russia and does not, in itself, determine the fate of the PlayStation applications.
What happens next
Rospatent must now review the applications for the PlayStation name and logo in the specified classes. The review could result in trademark registration or refusal; filing the documents does not mean the marks are protected until a decision is made.
The next concrete step is for the agency to publish its decision on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s applications. It is also worth watching for announcements from the company about sales of PlayStation consoles, games and devices in Russia: trademark registration does not signal such changes.
