Resumption of Air Service in Nizhny Novgorod
As of September 22, 2026, Nizhny Novgorod Airport has lifted the temporary flight restrictions that had been in place for about a week. This decision allowed for the restoration of regular passenger flights and the return of more than 30 daily routes on domestic and international airlines.
The restrictions were introduced due to an update of the navigation and air traffic control system, which affected the schedules of around 15 airlines. The resumption of flights contributes to normalizing the region’s transport infrastructure and makes Nizhny Novgorod more accessible for tourists and business travelers.
Reasons for the Temporary Suspension
The primary reason for the temporary shutdown of airport operations was the implementation of the new navigation equipment suite “SkyNavigator-2026,” certified by the Federal Air Transport Agency in July 2026. A six-day suspension of flights was necessary to safely transition to the new system.
The technical upgrades increased air traffic control accuracy to 98%, reducing delay risks and enhancing safety. Over 50 million rubles from the federal budget were allocated for the equipment upgrade, highlighting the project’s significance for the aviation industry in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Impact on Passengers and Airlines
During the restrictions, passengers faced cancellations of about 200 flights, affecting more than 14,000 people. Airlines, including Aeroflot and Pobeda, had to reroute some flights to nearby airports, increasing logistics costs and reducing the load on the Nizhny Novgorod hub.
Following the lifting of restrictions, airlines plan to gradually return to pre-crisis traffic levels, which in 2025 amounted to approximately 2.3 million passengers annually. The improved infrastructure is expected to boost this figure by 10–15% over the coming year.
Economic Importance of the Airport to the Region
Nizhny Novgorod Airport is a key transport hub, handling more than 40% of all air traffic in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Its operation directly influences tourism development, foreign trade relations, and the region’s investment appeal.
According to estimates by the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the airport’s resumed operations will preserve more than 1,200 jobs and generate about 1 billion rubles in regional budget revenue in 2026–2027 through taxes and fees from airlines and passengers.
Development and Modernization Plans
As part of a long-term development strategy through 2030, plans include expanding the passenger terminal and constructing a new 3.5-kilometer runway. These projects aim to increase the airport’s capacity to 5 million passengers per year.
Investments totaling around 3 billion rubles will come from both the federal budget and private investors. The modernization is expected to elevate the airport’s status and strengthen its position as one of the leading aviation hubs in the Central Federal District.
