Scientists have found that polluted air containing fine particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10, as well as nitrogen dioxide, significantly affects human mental health. Studies covering both short-term exposure (up to 30 days) and long-term exposure (over 30 days) show statistically significant links with increased cases of depression and anxiety. These findings highlight air quality as a crucial factor not only for physical but also for mental well-being.
A statistical analysis of 81 studies published in the journal Environmental Research confirmed these correlations, though a direct cause-and-effect relationship has yet to be established. The European Environment Agency emphasizes that mental health depends on many factors including genetics, socioeconomic conditions, and lifestyle; thus, air pollution is considered one of several complex risk elements.

Fine particulate matter PM2.5, black carbon, and nitrogen dioxide have been the most extensively studied pollutants. Specifically, PM2.5 shows the most consistent link with anxiety, while a combination of PM2.5 and black carbon correlates with depressive symptoms.
Short-term exposure to pollutants also has an impact: several studies recorded increased risks of depression and anxiety flare-ups when concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and nitrogen dioxide in the air rose.
