Project Announcement
On August 27, 2026, a new project to improve bicycle path infrastructure was officially announced in Russia, aimed at creating conditions for the development of cycling in cities across the country. The project is initiated by the «VeloCity» organization, which has been actively working on the development of bicycle infrastructure and promoting cycling among the population since 2020.
The goal of the new project is not only to improve the condition of existing bicycle paths but also to create new routes, which will increase the number of cyclists by 25% over the next three years. This has become especially relevant in light of the need to enhance ecological conditions and reduce automobile traffic in urban areas.
Development of Bicycle Cities
As part of the «VeloCity» project, the creation of so-called «bicycle cities» is planned, where bicycle infrastructure will become an integral part of urban life. Among these cities are Almetyevsk, which has already received the status of the unofficial «bicycle capital of Russia,» and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, where 400 new meters of bicycle paths will be constructed this year.
According to data presented at a press conference, projects will be implemented in Almetyevsk to integrate bicycle routes with public transportation, which will increase the number of bicycle users and improve the overall state of urban ecology.
Environmental and Economic Aspects
One of the key objectives of the project is to improve the environmental situation in cities. Scientists have calculated that an increase in the number of cyclists could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% compared to automotive transport. The project also plans to implement educational programs for residents aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of cycling for health and the environment.
The economic component of the project is also being taken into consideration: it is expected that the introduction of new bicycle routes will lead to a 15% increase in local business revenues due to a higher flow of customers using bicycles for transportation around the city.
Standards and Implementation
The project will be implemented in accordance with new standards developed by the Ministry of Transport of Russia. These standards include safety requirements for cyclists and the creation of convenient crossings, as well as the necessity of equipping bicycle parking areas. Currently, concepts have already been developed for 10 major cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Funding for the project will be provided both from the federal budget and local authorities. The total investment is expected to be around 2 billion rubles, which will allow for the planned activities to be carried out by 2028.
Community and Activist Participation
An important element for the successful implementation of the project is the involvement of local communities and activists. Within the framework of the «VeloCity» initiative, a series of public events are planned where residents can discuss their ideas and suggestions for improving bicycle infrastructure. This will not only take citizens’ interests into account but also increase their engagement in the process of transforming the urban environment.
According to statistics, in recent years the number of people actively using bicycles has increased by 20%, indicating a growing interest in cycling and the need for further development of the corresponding infrastructure.
